All processing happens locally in your browser using Canvas 2D compositing with alpha-channel masks + ag-psd (bundled locally) for layered PSD; the AI features run on-device (IMG.LY background removal, Real-ESRGAN, face-api). No upload, no server, no tracking.

  • Real layers, real masks — Layers with opacity and blend modes, plus layer masks you paint black and white on. Merge down, merge visible, flatten — and every mask survives a round trip through PSD.
  • One-click background removal — An AI model finds the subject and hides the background with a mask instead of deleting it, so you can paint the edge back in wherever it guessed wrong.
  • Selections that aren’t just boxes — Rectangle and ellipse marquee, freehand and polygonal lasso, magic wand, add/subtract with Shift and Alt, invert and feather. Fills, deletes, strokes and adjustments all stop at the edge.
  • Curves, levels and adjustment layers — Curves and Levels with a live preview, and non-destructive adjustment layers (brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, levels, curves) that open and save as real PSD adjustment layers.
  • Layer styles and Free Transform — Drop shadow, stroke and outer glow that stay editable, a gradient tool, and Free Transform to scale and rotate with handles (Ctrl/⌘+T).
  • Retouching and AI extras — Clone stamp, spot healing brush, AI upscaling of a layer and one-click face blur or pixelate — all computed on your device.

How It Works

  1. Open a photo or a PSD — Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, iPhone HEIC or layered .psd — or start from a blank canvas. If you were here before, you can pick up your last session.
  2. Edit on layers — Select, mask, paint, retouch, add adjustment layers and styles, drop more images in as layers. Everything stays editable until you flatten it.
  3. Save it your way — Download a PNG, a JPG at the quality you pick, or a layered .psd with its masks, styles and adjustment layers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a free Photoshop alternative?

For everyday edits, yes. It’s a Photoshop-style editor — layers, masks, selections, curves, adjustment layers, layer styles — that costs nothing and runs in a browser tab. It is not Photoshop, and it isn’t made by or affiliated with Adobe. I built it for the 90% of jobs that don’t need a full desktop suite.

Can I open a PSD file online without Photoshop?

Yes. Each pixel layer arrives with its name, position, visibility, opacity, blend mode and layer mask. Drop shadow, stroke and outer glow come in as editable styles, and brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, levels and curves adjustment layers stay adjustment layers. Groups are unpacked into plain layers, and anything I can’t show yet (other adjustment kinds, bevels, inner shadows) is announced, not quietly dropped.

Will my layers survive if I save as PSD?

Yes. Layers, masks, styles and those four kinds of adjustment layer are written back as the real thing, with a flattened preview for apps that only read that. Text layers are saved as pixels, not editable type.

How does the background remover work — is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model downloads to your browser the first time you use it (from IMG.LY’s file server, the same one my Remove Background tool uses) and then runs on your device. The cutout becomes a layer mask, so nothing is deleted — paint white on the mask to bring back anything it missed.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding, painting, compositing, the AI features and PSD writing all happen on your device. The only downloads are the page itself and, if you use them, the AI models. Autosave goes to this browser’s own storage, never to a server.

Does it work on a phone?

It does. Pinch to zoom, drag with one finger to paint, switch to the hand tool to pan. It’s happiest on a tablet or laptop, but the whole thing fits a phone screen.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Photoshop’s: V move, M marquee, L lasso, W magic wand, C crop, B brush, E eraser, S clone stamp, J spot heal, G gradient, I eyedropper, T text, U shapes, H hand, Z zoom — Shift+letter switches variants. Ctrl/⌘+J, E, T, L, M, U, I, S and friends do what you’d expect. Press ? in the editor for the full, searchable list.

What doesn’t it do yet?

Layer groups (they’re flattened into plain layers), editable PSD text, smart objects, vector masks, CMYK, per-channel curves, and the effects beyond shadow, stroke and glow. Spot healing is a quick patch-and-blend, not Photoshop’s content-aware engine. If one of those is what you need, email me — that’s how I decide what to build next.

The first version did layers and PSDs, and the very first thing I reached for when I used it myself was a mask. So masks are in — paint them black and white, Shift-click to switch one off, and they survive a round trip through Photoshop. Then I kept going: a background remover that hides instead of deletes, lasso and magic wand, curves and levels, adjustment layers, drop shadows and strokes, a clone stamp and a healing brush, and Photoshop's own keyboard shortcuts (press ? to see them all). It also autosaves to your browser now, because I lost an edit to a closed tab and decided once was enough.
