Frequently Asked Questions

Can it show individual layers?

It lists every layer and group by name (hidden ones are marked) and shows the flattened image. To see, hide or edit layers one at a time, click "Open layers in Photo Editor": the file goes over inside your browser, still without uploading anything.

Why does my PSD look a little different from Photoshop?

Usually it doesn't: most PSDs carry a flattened copy saved by Photoshop itself, and that copy is what you see. Two exceptions. If "Maximize compatibility" was off when the file was saved, there is no flattened copy, so the preview is built from the layers, and layer effects, some blend modes and smart filters can differ. And CMYK files are converted to screen colours without their colour profile, so they look close, not exact.

Which PSD files can it open?

PSD and PSB (large document format), in RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Bitmap and Duotone, at 8, 16 or 32 bits per channel. A document bigger than a browser canvas can hold is previewed scaled down, and the page says so. Multichannel documents aren't supported.

This one is a proper confession: the PSD viewer couldn't show a single PSD. It asked the browser to decode the file, and no browser can, so every file ended on "Cannot render preview". It now reads the flattened image Photoshop keeps inside every PSD and PSB itself: RGB, CMYK, Lab, grayscale, indexed, bitmap and duotone, 8, 16 or 32-bit, transparency kept in the PNG. Files saved with "Maximize compatibility" off are rebuilt from their layers (it tells you). You also get the list of layers and groups, and one click opens the layers in the Photo Editor.
