Frequently Asked Questions
Does it change the PDF content?
No — pages and text stay identical. The file can get a little smaller: leftovers from earlier saves that nothing uses any more are not written.
Upload to server?
No. Runs in your browser.
Can I clear all metadata?
The fields shown here, yes: clear every box and tick "Remove the creation and modification dates", and they are deleted from the document properties and from the XMP copy. Other hidden data (document IDs, edit history in the XMP, comments, attachments, scripts) stays — Sanitize PDF removes all of that.
Does it change the dates?
No. The creation and modification dates stay exactly as they were, and the tool does not sign itself in as the producer. Tick the box if you want the dates gone.
Why do some readers show a different title than Finder or Explorer?
A PDF can carry its properties twice: in the document info and in an XMP packet, and readers differ in which they read. This tool writes the same values to both, so they agree.
Notes from Milo 🐨
Embarrassing one: clearing the Author box left an empty Author in the file, the old name stayed in the file's second copy of its properties (XMP), and every save quietly signed the PDF as made by the library I use and reset the modified date. Now a cleared box really deletes the field, both copies are updated, the dates stay as they were unless you tick Remove, and you can also edit the app and producer fields.
The boxes started empty, so changing just the subject also wiped the title and author already in your file. Now they open with what the PDF already says: change what you want, and clear a box only when you mean to remove it.
