Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

No. A scan is a picture of the page with no text in it, so there's nothing to put in cells — the tool tells you so instead of handing you an empty spreadsheet. PDF OCR can read the words out of a scan (as plain text, not a table).

Will merged cells and borders be preserved?

No. A PDF doesn't store cells, only where each piece of text is drawn, so rows and columns are rebuilt from those positions. Colours, borders and merged cells aren't recreated, and text that wraps onto a second line inside a cell becomes a row of its own.

Are the numbers real numbers in Excel?

Yes. Amounts like 2,345.67, -4.50, (12.00), $1,000 or 12% become numbers you can add up, shown the way the PDF wrote them. Dates, codes with a leading zero (007) and anything over 15 digits stay as text. A page written as 1.234,56 is read with a decimal comma.

I ran a plain bank statement through this and got a spreadsheet I wouldn't wish on anyone: ten columns for a five-column table, a blank column between every real one, and wherever a cell was empty the rest of the row slid left, so a balance ended up under "Category". It now works out the columns from the whole page, so an empty cell stays empty and every amount stays in its column. Amounts are real numbers you can add up (2,345.67, (12.00), $1,000, 12% — and 1.234,56 on a page written that way), rotated pages come out the right way round, and a scanned PDF gets a straight answer instead of an empty file.
