An Instagram carousel is a single post with up to 20 swipeable photos or videos (Instagram raised the limit from 10 in 2024). Split one wide picture across the slides and people swipe through it as one continuous image — every swipe reveals the next part. The most common request: "I have one wide image, how do I split it into a 5-slide carousel where the slides line up when someone swipes?" Here's how.

Step 1: Pick your source image

The slides together form one long strip, so a carousel works best when the source is much wider than one slide. The math:

  • 4:5 portrait slides: each slide is 1080×1350. A 5-slide carousel is a strip of 5 × 1080 = 5400 × 1350 pixels (a 4:1 panorama).
  • 1:1 square slides (classic): each slide is 1080×1080. A 5-slide carousel is 5400 × 1080 pixels (a 5:1 super-wide strip).

If your picture has a different shape, part of it is cut off (it is never stretched); if it has fewer pixels than the strip, it is enlarged and looks soft. Carousel Maker tells you both — how much of the picture is kept and how much it's enlarged — and marks the slide count that fits your picture best.

Step 2: Open Carousel Maker

Step 3: Choose slides, shape and what stays

  • Number of slides (2-20): fewer slides need a less wide picture; more tell a longer story. The list marks the count that fits your picture with the least cut off.
  • Shape: 4:5 portrait (1080×1350) is 25% taller than a square at the same width, so it fills more of a phone screen. 1:1 square is the classic format. 1440-wide high-res versions are there too; Instagram scales every upload to its own size anyway.
  • The frame: your picture is shown with the part that becomes the slides lit up and a dashed line at every seam. Drag the frame (or use the arrow keys) to choose what stays.

The phone-style preview updates as you change anything. Swipe through it the way a follower would — check that nothing important is cut at a seam.

Step 4: Download and post in order

Click "Download all as ZIP." The ZIP contains files named slide-01.jpg through slide-N.jpg. In Instagram's new-post screen, tap the multi-select icon and tap the slides in number order (slide-01 first, slide-02 second, etc.). The carousel keeps the order you tap them in.

Common mistakes

Posting slides in the wrong order

Instagram doesn't sort by file name — it uses the order you tap. Always pick them in number order from the ZIP.

Text getting cut at slide seams

If your source image has text or a face that crosses a seam, it gets cut in half across two slides. Check the dashed lines on the frame: drag the frame, or change the slide count by one (which moves every seam).

Using a square photo for a long carousel

A normal photo is nowhere near 4:1. Split into many portrait slides it keeps only a thin band of the picture, enlarged several times. The page shows how much is kept — pick the count it suggests, or start from a real panorama.

Can I do this on mobile?

What's the maximum image size I can drop in?

Whatever your browser can open. Very large originals (100 MP and up) can run out of memory on older phones — shrink them first with Resize Image.

What happens to a transparent PNG?

Slides are JPEG, which has no transparency, so transparent areas come out white — the page says so when your picture has any.

How is this different from Instagram Grid Maker?
