How to Make an Instagram Carousel from One Image (Free, No Upload) | ToolKoala
How-to ยท Instagram
"Three ways to make an Instagram carousel. Most need an app, an upload, or a paid Pro plan. Here's the no-upload, browser-only way. โ Milo ๐จ"
An Instagram carousel is a single post with 2-10 swipeable slides. It's the highest-engagement post format on Instagram โ about 1.4ร the reach of single-image posts on average โ because each slide is a new chance to capture attention as users swipe. The most common request: "I have one wide image, how do I split it into a 5-slide carousel where the slides line up when someone swipes?" Here's how.
TL;DR (the 60-second version)
- Open Carousel Maker
- Drop your wide image
- Pick number of slides (2-10) and aspect ratio (default 4:5 portrait)
- Download the ZIP, post slides in order
Total time: under 5 minutes. No upload, no Instagram authentication, no watermark.
Step 1: Pick your source image
A carousel works best when the source image is significantly wider than a single Instagram slot. The math:
- 4:5 portrait slides (Instagram's preferred default since 2023): each slide is 1080ร1350. A 5-slide carousel needs a source image of at least
5 ร 1080 = 5400 pixels wideand 1350 pixels tall (a 4:1 panoramic aspect). - 1:1 square slides (classic): each slide is 1080ร1080. A 5-slide carousel needs a source of at least
5 ร 1080 = 5400 pixels wideand 1080 pixels tall (a 5:1 super-wide aspect).
If your source is smaller, the tool will upscale (slightly soft result) or crop (loses edges). Carousel Maker shows a fit-quality warning if your source isn't ideal.
Step 2: Open Carousel Maker
Go to /carousel-maker. The tool runs entirely in your browser โ no upload, no signup. Drop your image into the drop zone or click to browse.
Step 3: Choose slides and aspect
Two controls matter:
- Number of slides (2-10): Instagram caps at 10 slides per carousel. Pick fewer for higher per-slide impact; more for a longer story.
- Aspect ratio: 4:5 portrait (1080ร1350) fills more of the user's screen and is Instagram's preferred default since 2023. 1:1 square is the classic format. The tool also offers 1440ร1800 high-res variants for source images that can support them.
Hit "Generate" and you'll see a phone-style preview with swipe arrows. Walk through it the way a user would โ verify nothing important is being cut at the seam between slides.
Step 4: Download and post in order
Click "Download all as ZIP." The ZIP contains files named slide-01.jpg through slide-N.jpg. In Instagram's "New Post" flow, tap the multi-select icon and select all slides in numeric order (slide-01 first, slide-02 second, etc.). Instagram will preserve that order in the published carousel.
Common mistakes
Posting slides in the wrong order
If you select them out of order, Instagram won't auto-sort. Always pick them in numeric order from the ZIP.
Text getting cut at slide seams
If your source image has text or a logo that crosses where the slide split will happen, that text gets cut in half across two slides. Before generating: check the preview, and if a critical element is at the seam, either crop your source so the seam falls in a "quiet" area, or reduce the slide count by 1 (which shifts where seams land).
Using a square source for a portrait carousel
If you feed a 1:1 source into a 4:5 carousel, the tool has to crop top and bottom to fit. You'll lose visual real estate. Either crop the source first or switch the carousel aspect to 1:1.
Frequently asked
Can I do this on mobile?
Yes โ Carousel Maker works in mobile browsers. You can run the entire flow on your phone: drop image, generate, download ZIP, open ZIP in Photos, upload to Instagram. iOS Safari and Chrome both work.
What's the maximum image size I can drop in?
Around 50MB before browser memory becomes a constraint. Most source images are way under that. If you're trying to drop a 200MP DSLR original, downscale first with Resize Image.
Does the order I post in affect engagement?
Instagram's algorithm doesn't penalize carousel order, but user behavior does: the first slide gets ~3ร the engagement of the last. Lead with your strongest visual or hook; save reveal/CTA for slide 1 if it's the hero shot of a campaign.
How is this different from Instagram Grid Maker?
Different goal. Carousel Maker creates a multi-slide post (people swipe through). Instagram Grid Maker splits one image across multiple separate posts that line up in your profile grid โ a permanent visual effect when someone visits your profile, not a swipe experience.
Will Instagram compress the slides again?
Yes โ Instagram re-encodes uploads for their CDN. Carousel Maker outputs at 95% JPEG quality and 1080-pixel-wide dimensions (Instagram's recommended size). After Instagram's re-compression, slides still look sharp on most devices.
