Frequently Asked Questions

What size should my source image be?

Use a square image at least 512x512 pixels. Larger images produce better results when scaled down. SVG sources work best.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is a multi-size icon format used by browsers for tab icons. Our ICO file contains 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 sizes in one file.

My image isn’t square. Will it be squashed?

No. If the image isn’t square you choose how it fits: the whole image centred with transparent edges (the default), the centre square cropped out, or stretched if you really want that. The previews update as you switch.

I dropped a wide logo in here and every icon came out squashed, because the tool simply stretched whatever you gave it into a square. Now, if your image isn't square, it asks: fit the whole thing with transparent edges (the default), crop the centre square, or stretch if that's really what you want. "Download All PNGs" also fired seven downloads at once, and browsers block, or stop to ask about, everything after the first, so it's now one ZIP with favicon.ico, every PNG size and the HTML tags inside. Smaller things: the tiny 16 and 32 px icons are scaled down in steps, so they come out cleaner from a big photo; dropping something that isn't an image now tells you so instead of doing nothing; and the size labels are in your language.
