How It Works

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the flag quiz work?
Each round shows one flag and four names. Pick the right one before the clock runs out — 15 rounds in total, with faster answers worth more points. Difficulty changes both the time limit and how similar the wrong answers are.
Why do the wrong answers look so much like the right one?
On purpose. I scored every flag against every other flag by how similar they look, and the harder levels draw their wrong answers from that list. A quiz that offers France, Japan, Brazil and Egypt answers itself; one that offers France, Italy, Ireland and Mexico is a real test.
Are Chad and Romania both in there?
Yes, both are questions — but they are never offered as options to each other, and neither are Indonesia and Monaco. Those pairs render as the same picture in emoji form, so a round with both would be a coin flip rather than a question.
Why are the flags images instead of emoji characters?
Because Windows has no flag emoji. On Windows a flag character shows up as two letters — which would literally spell out the region code next to the question. Drawing them as SVG images means the quiz works the same everywhere.
Which flags are included?
Every two-letter country and region flag in the Unicode emoji set — 258 of them — minus eight that are drawn exactly like another flag: Bouvet Island and Svalbard & Jan Mayen look like Norway, St. Martin and Clipperton Island like France, Heard & McDonald Islands like Australia, U.S. Outlying Islands like the US, Ceuta & Melilla like Spain and Diego Garcia like the British Indian Ocean Territory. That leaves 250: sovereign states, territories and dependencies alike, plus the EU and UN flags — so expect Ascension Island as well as Argentina. England, Scotland and Wales are a different kind of emoji flag and aren’t in the quiz. Names come straight from the Unicode standard; I do not editorialise them.
Can the same flag come up twice in one game?
Not as the question. Each of the 15 rounds asks about a different flag; one you have already answered can still turn up as a wrong option in a later round.
Notes from Milo 🐨
A third of games asked the same flag twice — even today's Daily had Kosovo in rounds 9 and 11, because each round was drawn from all 250 flags without looking at the ones before. Now each of the 15 questions is a different flag (from tomorrow's Daily on; today's stays as everyone got it). On a phone the game also scrolls itself into view when you press Start and the flag no longer sits in a box of empty space, so all four answers are on screen while the clock runs — before, the bottom two were under the fold.
