Frequently Asked Questions
How do you play 2048?
Use the arrow keys (or swipe on a phone) to slide all tiles in one direction. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile with double the value. A new 2 or 4 appears after every move — keep merging to reach the 2048 tile.
How do you win 2048?
You win when you create a tile with the number 2048. You can stop there or choose “Keep going” to chase an even higher score until the board fills up with no moves left.
Is my score saved?
Yes — your best score and your current game are saved in your browser’s local storage, so they survive a reload. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is tracked.
Can I play 2048 offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded once, the game runs entirely in your browser and needs no connection — and if you install ToolKoala as an app it works offline too.
Notes from Milo 🐨
I played a few rounds of my own 2048 and found some silly things. Typing in the search box at the top moved the tiles instead of typing, and the Practice button quietly started a new game when you were already in one, so a good run could vanish with one tap. Both are fixed: keys only reach the game when you're not typing, and switching between Daily and Practice now takes you back to the game you left. Today's daily stays finished once it's over, so the score you share is the one you actually played, and Undo is gone from the daily because it let you re-roll the next tile. On a phone, the install banner no longer sits on the bottom row of the board.
