How It Works
- Read the clues — The numbers on a row or column are the lengths of the filled runs, in order, with at least one blank between them.
- Fill what must be filled — Start with the biggest numbers — in a 15-wide row, a run of 12 has to cover the middle 9 squares whatever else happens.
- Mark what cannot be — Crossing off known blanks is what unlocks the next deduction. Most people under-use it.

How do you solve a nonogram?
Each number is the length of a run of filled squares in that row or column, in order, separated by at least one blank. The usual opening is to look for overlaps: in a 15-wide row, a run of 12 must cover the middle 9 squares no matter where it sits. From there, crossing off squares you know are blank is what unlocks the next step — most beginners fill too much and mark too little.
Is every puzzle solvable without guessing?
Yes, and that is checked rather than hoped for. Before a puzzle ships, a solver tries to complete it using only single-row and single-column deductions. If it ever has to guess and backtrack, the puzzle is thrown away. Roughly three quarters of the candidates I generate are rejected this way.
Why is it called a nonogram and not Picross?
Nonogram is the generic name for the puzzle. Picross is a Nintendo trademark, and Griddlers and Pic-a-Pix are other companies’ brands, so this is a nonogram.
Where do the pictures come from?
They are traced from openly-licensed emoji artwork — the outline is sampled down to the grid, then filtered for a sane amount of filled squares and enough structure to be worth solving. A plain blob makes a dull puzzle, so those are rejected too.
Does the daily puzzle work offline?
The puzzles come down in one small file, so once the page has loaded the game runs entirely on your device. Your streak is stored in this browser and never leaves it.
