How It Works

  1. Pick a difficulty — Easy 4x4, Medium 8x8, or Hard 12x12 — this sets the board size, the clock, and how much each round scores.
  2. Study the grid — Every tile shows the same emoji — up to 144 of them. One was drawn by a different design set.
  3. Tap the odd one — Answer before the timer runs out. Faster correct picks score more, over 15 rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Odd One Out emoji quiz work?

Each round fills a grid with the same emoji — 16, 64 or 144 tiles depending on difficulty. All the tiles but one are drawn by the same emoji design set; the remaining tile comes from a different one. Your job is to spot that tile before the clock runs out. There are 15 rounds, and a faster correct answer is worth more points.

Which emoji designs do you use?

Two openly-licensed sets: Twemoji (CC-BY 4.0) and Microsoft Fluent Emoji (MIT). I deliberately do not use the Apple, Samsung or Google artwork you see in some other emoji quizzes — those designs are copyright their vendors and are not mine to redistribute.

Why only two emoji sets?

Because they are the two that make a fair puzzle. I tried a third (OpenMoji) and dropped it: its outline style is spottable from across the room, and for some emoji it draws a visibly different object, so the odd tile looked like a broken image instead of a design variant. I also score every emoji pair before shipping it and drop the ones where the two designs are almost identical or barely related — about a quarter of them do not make the cut.

Why does the emoji look different from the one on my phone?

That is the whole point of the game. Every platform draws the same Unicode emoji in its own style, so 😀 from one designer can look noticeably different from the next. The quiz is built out of that difference.

Is there a leaderboard?

No, and that is on purpose. A leaderboard means an account and a server logging how you play. Your best score is kept in your browser instead — so the only person you are competing with is you.

Can I play offline?

Partly. The game itself runs entirely in your browser, but each round loads two small emoji images from the site. Rounds using emoji you have already seen will work offline once they are cached; brand-new ones need a connection.

Is the 12x12 board actually possible?

Yes, and you get 80 seconds for it. The trick is not to check tiles one at a time — let your eye sweep the grid and the odd design tends to break the pattern on its own. It is the mode worth 6x a point for a reason.
